A martyr of the first generation of the Arya Samaj.
Pandit Shri Lekhram was a first-generation Arya Samaj orator of high rank, a master of debate, and a writer. Panditji was fully devoted to dharma and even sacrificed his life for dharma. Here we present a brief introduction of Panditji.
The birth of Panditji and the lineage of warriors
Panditji was born on 8 Chaitra Samvat 1915 in Saidpur village, Jhelum district, Western Punjab. His grandfather Shri Narayan Singh was a brave and renowned warrior in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s army.
Childhood: Panditji was very intelligent and talented from childhood. Panditji always stood first in class. Along with being brilliant, he was fearless and truthful — he would even point out the mistakes of elders and teachers.
Education: Panditji received his initial education from his uncle Pandit Gandaramji. Panditji later studied the Persian language under Shri Tulsiramji, where at a very young age he read all authentic Persian texts. He was also a peerless student in subjects like mathematics.
Journey of Dharma
Panditji had always been on the path of spirituality. He was once a neo-Vedantin. He was also an idol-worshipper. He studied the Guru Granth Sahib and the Bible as well. At times, he even rubbed his forehead on Muslim graves. Yet his mind did not find stability — doubt remained within him.
Then a time came when, through a magazine, he came to know about Rishi Dayanand and the place where he was preaching. Panditji immediately travelled from Peshawar to Ajmer and had darshan of the Rishi. He placed his religious questions before Rishi Dayanandji and received solutions. Now he had fully become a follower of Vedic dharma, and when he took leave from Rishi Dayanandji, the Rishi advised him: “Do not marry before the age of 24.”
Household life and his wife’s dedication to dharma
Panditji did not wish to marry. He believed that after entering household life he would not be able to fully dedicate himself to dharma. Still, due to family reasons, he married a simple-hearted woman named Lakshmidevi. Because of dharma-propagation, he could not fully perform household duties, but he took great care of his wife’s health and education. Both of them sometimes attended Arya Samaj events together.
After Panditji’s death, his wife donated the insurance money received from her husband Lekhramji for the education of students in the Gurukul. Because of Lakshmideviji’s donation, many students could study — one of them became a great scholar and debate-master of his time, named Pandit Buddhadev Vidyalankar. Lakshmideviji was truly a devi.
Panditji’s dedication to dharma
In those days, because of British rule, Panditji resigned from his government job, rejecting the slavery of foreigners, and also published a monthly magazine named Dharmopadesh for dharma-propagation.
When Pandit Bhimsen Sharma — former disciple of Rishi Dayanand and a first-generation Arya Samaj scholar — asked Pandit Lekhram to write in support of meat-eating, Panditji warned him that if he gave any justification in favour of meat-eating out of greed or pressure, he would be deprived of the Arya Samaj platform and his reputation would be ruined.
Lekhramji declared in the preface of his book Punarjanma Mimamsa that he would propagate Vedic dharma until his last breath.
Once, a Hindu was about to abandon his own dharma and take initiation into another creed. The brave Lekhram was always ready for purification (Shuddhi). When he learned of this incident, he boarded a train toward that place. When he found out that the train would not stop there, he jumped out of the moving train for the sake of the Shuddhi mission and suffered some injuries. But these difficulties were nothing before the fire of his dedication to dharma, and he got up and proceeded for Shuddhi. As a result, that person was saved from going into another faith.
Unwavering faith in God
Pandit Lekhram was a true worshipper of God. When Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the preacher of Islam, began making prophecies regarding Panditji’s death, the fearless Lekhram presented these lines: “Dushman agar kavi ast, nigahban kavitar ast” — meaning, “If the enemy is strong, the protecting Lord is far stronger.”
His influence
While explaining Vedic principles in Ajmer, he delivered very investigative and influential lectures. Influenced by him, the Muslim Maulana Abdul Rehman accepted Vedic dharma and assumed the name Somdatt.
Bakshi Ramratanji, a principal of D.A.V. College Lahore, did not believe in reincarnation. He seemed influenced by the Bible. When he read the book Saboot-e-Tamasukh written by Pandit Lekhram, his eyes were opened. He began believing in the principles of karma-phala and rebirth.
His work on the biography of Rishi Dayanand
The work of writing Rishi Dayanand’s biography was entrusted to Panditji. It is astonishing that within only eight years this unparalleled hero travelled through countless villages, towns, and paths across the country — from east to west and north to south — and collected so much material regarding the Rishi’s life that one is left amazed. At that time, there were neither such transportation facilities, nor typewriters, nor other modern means.
While he was working on the biography, he was simultaneously doing preaching and debate-related dharma work. He was not receiving any extra money from livelihood activities. What a self-sacrificing, austere great man he was.
Life-sacrifice for Dharma and Rishi Dayanand, and his final instruction to the Aryas
Due to dharma-propagation and refutation of non-Vedic creeds, Panditji had made many enemies. In February 1897, a man, under the pretext of religious conversion, befriended Panditji. Panditji, being passionate about Shuddhi and dharma-propagation, naturally trusted him. In the month of March, when Panditji was working on the biography of the Rishi, he stretched due to fatigue while writing — and the assassin, lying in wait, immediately stabbed Panditji in the stomach, causing his intestines to come out. In his haste to flee, that cruel murderer also struck Panditji’s mother with a rolling pin.
Panditji was taken to the hospital where, after a few hours, he left his body. Even at the time of death, he spoke no worldly words and did not cry. He continued reciting Vedic mantras and gave this final instruction to the Aryas: “The work of writing and speaking must not stop.”
