Dr Vishuddhanand Mishra

Scholar, yogi, freedom fighter and teacher. This article was written in Hindi; an English rendering is provided first, with the original below.

Dr Vishuddhanand Mishra was an extraordinary personality who dedicated his life to the service of the Arya Samaj, the spread of education, and carrying Vedic knowledge to the common people. He was not merely a scholar, but also a yogi, a freedom fighter, a teacher and a humble human being, whose life is a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Dr Mishra was born on 24 November 1924 in Poothi village of Budaun district, Uttar Pradesh. From childhood his intellect was extraordinary — the proof being that he had committed the Shukla Yajurveda to memory. He earned several higher qualifications, including Siddhant Shastri, Ayurved Bhaskar, MA (Sanskrit and Hindi), Shastri and Acharya. Honouring his scholarship, various institutions of higher learning also conferred on him respectful titles such as ‘Vidya Varidhi’, ‘Darshan Vachaspati’ and ‘Vidya Vachaspati’.

In his life he served in several distinguished positions. He served for four years as Kulapati (Vice-Chancellor) of the Gurukul Vishwavidyalaya, Vrindavan, and was also a Sanskrit lecturer at Shri Krishna Inter College, Budaun. He was Vice-President of the Uttar Pradesh Arya Pratinidhi Sabha and President of the Sarvadeshik Dharmarth Sabha. Dr Mishra also made important contributions as an honoured member of the Government of India’s Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan and the Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Academy.

His contribution in the field of literature is beyond compare. He wrote more than 18 works in both Sanskrit and Hindi, including such important compositions as Vedarth-Kalpadrumah, Satyarth Prakash-Prashastikam, Hriday Mimansa and Prithviraj Vijay (a Sanskrit–Hindi poetic rendering). Together with his wife, Srimati Nirmala Mishra, he presented Sanskrit talks and poetry on Akashvani (All India Radio) for 25 years. For his remarkable style of oratory and poetic richness he was honoured with dozens of awards and decorations across the country.

On 24 September 2012 this great soul gave up the mortal body, but through the body of his renown and his timeless works he lives among us even today, inspiring us to walk the path of Dharma.
