Portrait of Pundit Ganpati Sharma
Pundit Ganpati Sharma

“Shastrarth Maharathi” — the great champion of scriptural debate.

Pundit Ganpati Sharma (born 1873, Churu, Rajasthan) was a highly influential Vedic scholar, an unparalleled orator, and an ideal ascetic of the Arya Samaj, known for his high moral character. His personality was shaped by the deep devotion of his father, Shri Bhaniram Vaidya, and his own intensive study of Sanskrit grammar and philosophical texts in Kanpur and Kashi. Upon returning to Churu, he came into contact with Pandit Kaluram Joshi — a disciple of Swami Dayanand Saraswati — which inspired him to join the Arya Samaj and dedicate his life to the propagation of Vedic Dharma. His fluent, hours-long lectures delivered without a loudspeaker to a crowd of 15,000 people at the 1905 annual festival of Gurukul Kangri established him as one of the topmost scholars in the country. Swami Shraddhanand highly praised not just his scholarship, but his pure character, spirit of service, and righteous conduct. It was because of these personal virtues that even his ideological opponents, like Reverend Brandon, became his close friends and admirers after debating him.

Pandit Ji was the epitome of sacrifice and duty. In 1904, following the tragic demise of both his father and his wife, he set aside his personal grief to lead the Vedic Dharma propagation at the Kurukshetra fair. His impactful presence there was even acknowledged by a European writer in the Pioneer magazine. Around the same time, he demonstrated his spirit of detachment by donating all of his late wife’s jewellery to the Gurukul Mahavidyalaya in Jwalapur. He conducted numerous debates (Shastrarth) across the country with scholars of various faiths. His most historic debate took place in September 1906 in Srinagar under the presidency of Maharaja Pratap Singh, where he defeated Reverend Johnson — who had challenged the local Kashmiri pundits — in Sanskrit, thereby elevating the glory of Vedic Dharma nationwide. Additionally, his friendly 1912 debate with Swami Darshananand Saraswati on the topic of whether trees possess a soul remains a celebrated example of intellectual and educational discourse. Pandit Ji aspired to write a series of books titled Vyakhyan Shatak and even set up a printing press for it, but due to his relentless tour schedules, he could only complete one book, Ishwar Bhakti Vishayak Vyakhyan. Free from the desires of worldly fame, family, and wealth, he continued to deliver lectures even while suffering from a 103-degree fever. Due to this severe strain and lack of rest, he passed away at the tragically young age of 39 on 27 June 1912.
